CLAYTON (KRON) — A man has been arrested and faces hate crime charges for burning a rainbow flag at a church in the East Bay.

This happened at the Clayton Valley Presbyterian Church, located at 1578 Kirker Pass Road. KRON reached out to them on Thursday and was told the vandalism has been going on since November.

In one of those incidents, the flag has been taken down at least eight times.

But on Tuesday, someone decided to burn it, police said. The pastor said the culprit left behind a note in Spanish that said, “All evil will be eradicated.”

Police have arrested a Concord man, 22-year-old John Hurst, Tuesday for the crime.

He is accused of committing a hate crime and arson.

A witness described the suspect and Hurst was arrested just down the street from the church.Bay City News contributed to this report
