Man arrested in Soquel shooting that killed man, injured woman

(KRON) — A 31-year-old Jose Luis Ramos was arrested Monday in connection with a Soquel shooting that killed a man and injured a woman, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department.

Ramos is suspected of fatally shooting 28-year-old Santiago Avalos Sanchez of Soquel and wounding an unidentified 32-year-old woman from Watsonville, according to Sheriff’s Sergeant Chris Clark.

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting near North Rodeo Gulch Road and Soquel Drive just before 2:30 p.m. where they found the both victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Clark said.

The pair was transported to a hospital, according to Clark, where Sanchez died.

The female victim is in stable condition, said Clark.

An autopsy of the man’s body is scheduled for Tuesday.

Detectives discovered that Ramos knew the female victim

Deputies allegedly located Ramos less than a mile from the scene of the shooting with methamphetamine and a methamphetamine pipe according to Clark.

He was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail, where he is being held on $2 million bail.

Sheriff’s forensics criminalists are looking into whether a wrapped item found near Ramos during his arrest is a gun or another item, Clark said.
