In a case that spanned nearly a decade, the Menlo Park Police Department arrested a man they say is responsible for killing a little girl in a speed racing crash.

Law enforcement didn’t find their suspect for almost a decade. There was a lot of searching before they were able to extradite him from Central America.

This was a collaborative effort among law enforcement agencies both here and abroad.

Although police remained tight-lipped about the investigation so as not to tip anyone off, the case was active since the deadly crash happened in Nov. 2009.

Police say Shannon Fox and another driver were racing upwards of 80 miles per hour when he ran a red light at the Willow Road and Bayfront Expressway intersection.

Witnesses say he crashed into a family vehicle, where 6-year-old Lisa Xavier was sitting in the back seat. She died from her injuries, and her mother sustained serious injuries.

Fox had an address in East Palo Alto, but investigators say he fled the country soon after the crash.

The United States Attorney’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and FBI were all involved in helping catch the suspect.

He was living a normal life in Central America for seven years until Guatemalan authorities caught up to him in Dec. 2016.

He fought extradition, lost his appeal, and after spending nearly two years in jail there, landed at San Francisco airport on Tuesday night.

He’s now booked in San Mateo County Jail on a number of felony charges, including vehicular manslaughter, hit and run causing death, and participating in a speed contest.

Fox is being held on $500,000 bail. He will be arraigned on Thursday morning

The suspect could face up to 12 years.
