WATSONVILLE (KRON) — Police arrested a man on suspicion of stabbing his cousin late Sunday night in Watsonville, police said Monday.

Officers responded to a report of a stabbing victim in the area of Union and Grant streets shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Arriving officers found the victim, a 28-year-old man, who said his cousin, Serafin Bernabe Jr., 33, had stabbed him at a home in the 400 block of Riverside Drive. Officers found Bernabe hiding in a bedroom and arrested him, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, illegal possession of a firearm and probation violation, according to police. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail, according to jail records.

Evidence discovered at the crime scene linked Bernabe to the stabbing, according to police.

Bernabe was found to be on probation at the time of his arrest, permitting officers to search the home, where they found a .22-caliber rifle in his bedroom, according to police.

The victim was transported to a trauma center to be treated for two stab wounds to his upper torso and a third on his hand. He was listed in stable condition, police said.
