NEWPORT BEACH, CA (WCMH) — A 36-year-old man is accused of beating and torturing his 65-year-old wife at their home in Southern California.

Court documents say Richard David Schlosser was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he began viciously attacking his wife. The Los Angeles Times reports Schlosser allegedly beat her for six hours, striking her with a candelabra and cutting her with scissors.

“He kept her captive in the apartment for hours … He actually waterboarded her,” prosecutor Mark Geller told City News Service.

Court documents say the woman was also choked had a towel shoved down her throat.

The woman told police she managed to call for help once her husband “sobered up.” She was then taken to the hospital.

City News Service says the couple married two months ago.

Schlosser was out on a $50,000 bail in connection with another domestic violence case at the time of the attack. That case involves a woman in her 20s, the LA Times reports.

Schlosser now faces charges of torture, domestic violence, false imprisonment and criminal threats. If convicted of the new charges, he could face up to life in prison.
