Major rideshare changes at SFO

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — As Lyft and Uber pickups become increasingly popular at airports across the country — the San Francisco International Airport announced today it’s time to make a change.

Right now, more than a third of airport traffic is coming from rideshare vehicles, so starting next month, all pickups will be localized in a separate area SFO has been working towards this for a couple of years now.

Starting June 3, no matter what type of ride share option you’re using, all pickups will be happening in a different place.

For Lyft driver Hans — picking up passengers at SFO can be frustrating.

“The cars tend to bunch up and drivers want to pick people up in the street and that’s no good either,” he said. “The terminals definitely get too crowded so it might be good for them to partition it out in some other way.”

Starting the week of June 3, that’s exactly what the airport plans to do.

In a bid to curb congestion, all domestic rideshare pickups will be moved to the central hourly parking garage.

“We’ve been studying this for several years we’ve been working with Uber and Lyft on some different solutions, and really we’re at a place now where it’s gonna take the relocation of all categories of uber and lyft pickups into our garage to really achieve the roadway flow we’re looking for,” said airport spokesman Doug Yakel.

Yakel says it’s about a three minute walk from exiting the concourse to the pick up location.

Passengers using Lyft and Uber pool options are already using the new area — but some say the signage to direct them here is inconsistent.

It’s an issue SFO says they’re already working on.

“We’re really gonna be focused on signage and having individuals at some of those key decision points to ensure that customers can find their way successfully,” Yakel said.

With 71,000 vehicles moving through the airport now on any given day — drivers and passengers are hoping it works Now this is only for domestic flights.

International pickups will still happen curbside at that terminal.

SFO says over the next month they’re continuing to make structural improvements to this top floor of the garage to support the larger volume that will be up here.
