UPDATE 4:48 AM – All lanes of I-880 have reopened.


OAKLAND (KRON) — The CHP has issued a Sig-Alert on southbound Interstate 880 in Oakland Tuesday night due to a possible sinkhole in the road, the CHP said.

The incident was first reported as a sinkhole or pot-hole in the third lane of southbound Highway 880 between Broadway and Oak Street at roughly 4:50 p.m.

A Sig-alert was issued at 6:26 p.m. when the CHP closed three lanes of the roadway and advised motorists to use alternate routes like Interstate Highway 580.

As of 8:22 p.m., officers estimated that the lanes could remain closed until 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Details about the extent of the damage to the roadway were not immediately available.
