Wednesday evening update 8:15 P.M.: Burned out vehicles and RVs could be seen along Highway 140.

There are two evacuation centers set up. One in Kelseyville and one in Middletown. Fewer than a dozen people are staying in those Red Cross centers on Wednesday night.

Wednesday evening update 7:45 P.M.: Gov. Jerry Brown will meet with Rocky Fire first responders Thursday, his office said. This comes days after declaring a state of emergency in California due to wildfires state-wide. Brown will receive a briefing on the efforts to contain the blaze.

Brown is scheduled to talk to crews just before 10:30 a.m. at the Cowboy Camp Trailhead on the west side of Highway 16. Map found here.

43 homes have been destroyed.

Wednesday evening update 6:06 P.M.: The fire has swelled to 69,600 acres and is 30 percent contained. 39 homes have now been destroyed. And 52 outbuildings have been destroyed, with 4 structures damaged.   The concern is temperatures will be in the mid-90s Thursday. 6,959 structures remain threatened.

Wednesday morning update 7:00 A.M. — Tuesday’s lower temperatures and rain over Northern California did little to help containment efforts of the massive Lake County wildfire, known as Rocky Fire, which has grown to 68,300 acres, Cal Fire officials said.

“The fire has crossed Hwy 20 in multiple locations and crews are working diligently to control the fire’s progression,” Cal Fire officials said.

Fire crews have maintained 20 percent containment and officials are hoping to have full containment by next week, at the earliest Monday.

People at the Moose Lodge, where evacuees came earlier Tuesday to get pillows, apples and piles of French toast, are being advised to evacuate as the fire moves closer. The lodge, just north of Clear Lake, was set up as a community assistance center for people and their pets.

More than 13,000 people have been required or urged to leave their homes. They have spent what may be just one of many nights in evacuation shelters, and many hotels are booking up.

TUESDAY UPDATE 8:10 P.M.: Cal Fire said the weather had been a huge help Tuesday. Low humidity levels were a big plus to fighting the flames. Fire is 20 percent contained.

UPDATE 6:28 P.M.: Smoke in the Spring Valley area has been pushed northeast, decreasing fire danger in the area.

UPDATE 5:31 P.M: Winds have sustained at about 12 miles per hour. And that is not good news for fighting a fire of the size of the Lake County fire.

Firefighters from inside and outside the state are fighting the blaze, including a crew from the central California city of Modesto.

Modesto Battalion Chief Hugo Patino says the fire is the “number one priority in the state” and getting the “lion’s share” of resources.

Its cause is under investigation.

They tried to stand their ground Tuesday against the blaze that jumped northeast on Highway 20 that had served as a containment line and grew by several square miles despite cooler weather and higher humidity.

No additional homes were consumed outside the two dozen already destroyed in the Lower Lake area, about 100 miles north of San Francisco. But more buildings such as barns, sheds and garages have burned.

Authorities have required or urged 13,000 people to leave some 5,500 homes. But some people told KRON 4 they refused to evacuate.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the flames are pushing north and chewing through parched brush that hasn’t burned in years.

The fire is just 20 percent contained since starting Wednesday.
