KRON4 Heroes: San Francisco police officer takes students on trip to Ghana

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco police officer recently featured on one of our KRON4 Hero segments is proving once again why he’s worthy of that distinction.

Ofc. Jason Johnson, also known as J.J, started a trip to Ghana three years ago. He leads a group that includes a dozen high school-aged kids from the Bayview.

On Thursday, with bags packed, they got ready for the long flight–23 hours.

Passports are ready, and final instructions have been given. They organized things they’re bringing to donate.

Most of the kids haven’t left the West Coast before. In order to go, they have to write an essay, be interviewed, fundraise, and parents have to be heavily involved in the process.

They will learn about cultures, slavery, and where some of their ancestors may have come from.

Ofc. J.J. got the idea to start the trip, made it happen, and now it’s a tradition–and it’s really is changing lives.
