A man is in life-threatening condition after being shot by a San Rafael police officer Sunday night, according to San Rafael Police Department.
Around 9:04 p.m. an officer saw a man waving around two knives in the middle of Market St.
The officer began talking to the person and called for back up.
After about 30 minutes of negotiating, the person started moving down Verdi St. toward Belveder St. where more officers were staged.
Those officers ordered the man to drop his knives.
When he refused, an assisting officer from another agency fired non-lethal bullets. These were ineffective, according to police.
The man then ran in the direction of a deputy with knives still in his hands.
This is when San Rafael officer shot the man wth his handgun.
Officers gave him medical treatment and he was taken to a local hospital.
He is being treated for life-threatening injuries.
The suspect’s identity has not been released.
