SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — As fireworks displays light up the skies across Bay Area communities for the Fourth of July, pet owners are being reminded to take steps to keep their animals safe.
The loud booming sounds of fireworks are terrifying for pets. Animal care experts say July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters because so many pets panic at the sound of firecrackers, prompting many dogs and cats to escape through an open door or window. Many get disoriented and get lost miles from their home.
Experts are reminding pet owners of measures they can take to make sure their four-legged companion stays safe.
Those tips include keeping animals inside the home with doors and windows securely closed. Pet owners can also leave the television on or play soft music to help soothe and calm animals. In the event your pet does run off, make sure your animal is wearing proper identification tags.
