The mystery meat in chili served last week in a western Nebraska school was kangaroo, and the superintendent is none too pleased.
“We will no way be serving food of this nature again. Period,” Mike Williams, superintendent of the Potter-Dix Public Schools, wrote parents in a letter Wednesday.
A post on Facebook by a western Nebraska mom indicates that some of the students may have gotten ill, but that could not be confirmed. According to the news site SandhillsExpress.com, the chili was served to students in middle and high school.
Williams’ letter indicates that he learned after the fact that kangaroo had been mixed with beef in the chili. The district is near Interstate 80 west of Sidney.
“I apologize for the anxiety and any harm that this has caused individual students and/or families,” he wrote.
Williams said the school district’s head cook, who could not be reached for comment, told him that he’d added kangaroo meat for its nutritional value and because it’s a lean cut.
The meat would have been approved by USDA inspectors, Williams noted.
“I do not think that kangaroo meat is unhealthy or dangerous,” he said.
But it clearly won’t be on the menu in the future.
“We will make sure that something like this never happens again,” Williams told parents.
