A Florida man who recently got sick with a mysterious illness while on vacation in the Dominican Republic is warning other people to just avoid visiting altogether amid recent mysterious deaths of American tourists on the island.

“Don’t go, just don’t go,” Jerry Martin told WTVT.

Martin and his wife were staying at the Caribe Club Princess Beach Resort and Spa in Punta Cana last month for their 40th wedding anniversary, according to WTVT.

They arrived May 17 and within just a few days Martin reportedly became sick with severe stomach pains while he was swimming in the pool.

“Fire in the bottom of my stomach. Pain, excruciating pain,” Martin told WTVT. “We were down at the pool when it hit, and I had to go up and just lay down and hold my stomach. It was on fire.”

Martin returned home to Florida where he visited the emergency room.

The news station reports Martin continues to lose weight and tests are being conducted to determine what the mystery illness is.

Martin said he only recently found out about the four other fatalities within two months in the Dominican Republic, and that there’s “no way” he would have gone had he known about the other deaths.

Four American tourists have reportedly died while on vacation in the Dominican Republic in recent months.

The most recent death was confirmed just this week to be a Bay Area native who was on vacation with his wife at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana when he got sick after reportedly drinking from the minibar in his hotel room.

An engaged couple from Maryland – 63-year-old Edward Holmes and 49-year-old Cynthia Day – were found dead in their room at the Bahia Principe La Romana on May 30.

They checked in the same day that a 41-year-old Pennsylvania woman died in her room after having a drink from the minibar in her room at a nearby resort on May 25.

Colorado couple who stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Hotel in the Dominican Republic has come forward saying they became violently ill after being exposed to what they suspect were insecticides through the air conditioning system.
