Judge rejects plea deal in deadly Ghost Ship Fire case, trial will happen

The judge has rejected the plea deal in the deadly Ghost Ship Fire case, according to KRON4’s Haaziq Madyun.

Thirty-six people died in the fire in Dec. 2016.

The two defendants, 48-year-old Derick Almena and 28-year-old Max Harris, will stand trial in the deaths of three dozen people.

The two men had accepted plea deals on 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The plea deals called for Almena, who rented the warehouse, to receive a nine-year prison sentence, and Harris, who collected rent and scheduled concerts, to get a six-year term.

Several relatives said they believed the sentences were too lenient and called on the judge to reconsider.

The attorney for Almena says the victims’ families want 36 years for the defendants.
