SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – The federal government has officially decided that one of the biggest tech toys is unsafe.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission sent out an official notice to retailers, manufacturers, and importers of the new safety standards on Friday.

The notice came after a months-long investigation into numerous reports of the self-balancing boards bursting into flames.

The CSPC has also called on all makers and sellers to voluntarily take non-UL-compliant hoverboards off the market until they can be certified as safe.

The notice applies to all self-balancing scooters, including single-wheel devices.WCMH-TV contributed to this report
