Investigators: Officer attack triggers manhunt in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE (KRON) — Police asked residents in a Lafayette neighborhood to remain indoors on Wednesday, as officers searched for a man who sheriff’s officials say attacked police.

Investigators issued the lockdown in the area of Driftwood Drive and Shire Oaks Ct., where the suspect may have been spotted.

Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee tells KRON 4 that there are very few details, but it appears the incident began when an officer attempted to question a man near the Lafayette Community Park. The man then attacked and fought with the officer before running off, according to Lee.

Investigators say the officer was not injured. The incident triggered a search by police and a helicopter crew.

Police say they are looking for a white male, roughly 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was wearing a white and gray checkered shirt, gray pants and white shoes.

Officers are asking community members to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.
