Investigation into suspicious garbage can fires in Downtown San Mateo

Authorities are searching for the suspects who set serval garbage cans on fire in Downtown San Mateo early Thursday morning. 

According to the San Mateo Police Department, it happened around 3:23 a.m. in an alley behind the first block of Second Avenue. 


Officers and firefighters responded to the scene and determined the fire was set in a group of garbage cans and located additional garbage cans on fire in the area. 

According to surveillance video, two people were seen leaving the area at the time of the fire.

Officials say the fires are suspicious and have launched an arson investigation into the incident.
