Fourth of July in the State’s Capitol.

Instead of celebrating, immigration rights activists rallied outside the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services building.

“Everybody celebrates Independence Day, but in reality, what independence can y’all celebrate?” said Irene Carmona, who was detained in 2013 by ICE.

Carmona says she was detained for a DUI and it’s why she’s protesting on this day.

“Maybe we can get something better for everyone. I want everybody to get free from jails,” said Carmona.

Unlike last week, this time, no tense moments at the doors of the federal property.

Chants and stories from about three dozen community members calling on a reunification of family separations and to end the federal agency known as ICE.

“It’s not something that’s incredibly radical, it’s just politicized that way… abolishment is the moral standpoint of our generation and we need rise up as a community as a generation and as a people to demand that ICE be abolished,” said Juan Prieto with the California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance.

No counter-protesters came and no police officers outside the federal building during the federal holiday.
