A threat to shoot up an Acalanes High School in Lafayette was written in the girl’s bathroom on Thursday afternoon, according to a letter sent out to parents.

The threatening message said, “I will shoot up the school next week.”

Lafayette police are investigating the case.

Here is the full statement from the school:

Dear Acalanes Community,

I wanted to let you know that this afternoon a student reported to administration that she found a threatening graffiti remark written in one of the stalls of the 400 girls restroom. I have included an image of it below.

We immediately contacted Lafayette Police who was quick to send two officers to assist in doing a risk assessment and evaluation of student safety. Both Lafayette Police and administration feel that the campus is safe to continue with our normal school schedule. We are investigating all possible leads and cooperating with Lafayette Police Department.

Student and staff safety is our highest priority. As a follow up response and precaution, Lafayette Police will be parking a car out front all next week and will have an officer on site.

In the wake of recent events, I recognize how difficult it can be to have conversations with your children about violence in schools.  The National Association of School Psychologists has provided a great resource for talking to children about violence and it is linked for your reference.

I am so thankful a student came forward with this report and encourage you to talk to your child about reporting any rumor, suspicious activity, or potentially unsafe situation immediately to school administration or a teacher. You can tell your child the following phrase, “If you see something, say something.”

If you have any questions or concerns, or any additional information, please reach out.

Thank you,
Travis Bell
