SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Nearly a week after the deadly attacks on two mosques in New Zealand, the country’s prime minister announced an immediate ban on assault rifles, high-capacity magazines and military style semi-automatic rifles.
The prime minister says there will be legislation introduced next week.
The attacks killed 50 people and injured more than 30 others.
Tonight, some 200 people gathered at San Francisco City Hall to remember those who were killed.
Candles were lit in memory of the 50 people who lost their life.
“This is not the new normal,” said one person who attending the vigil. “This should never be the new normal at all.”
More than a dozen people spoke condemning hate and condemning white nationalism — including Congressman Eric Swalwell.
“We continue to see this carousel of hate not just in the United States but across the globe and what we have to expect is better from our leaders,” the congressman said.
One Bay Area woman said that her kids attend an Islamic school in the South Bay and she worries for their safety.
“I am terrified every single day that I send them to school,” the mother said.
Everyone saying that we must all rise against what is happening — some hoping for stronger gun laws others wanting new leadership in Washington.
