OAKLAND (KRON) — The nation is reacting to the Oakland police scandals plaguing the department in the last couple of months.
On Wednesday, The “Nightly Show” posted a YouTube video appearing to make light of the misconduct probes.
“Scandal rocks the Oakland, CA, police department after revelations involving racist text messages and underage prostitution come to light,” the video’s description said.
The video starts by showing various news clips about the scandals. The host, Larry Wilmore then offers his humorous take.
In the first clip, the reporter talks about how the department is under “civilian control,” referring to when Oakland’s city administrator was appointed to head the department.
“Civilian control?” Wilmore said after the news clip. “You really want to do that Oakland? Have you met civilians? They’re the whole reason we have police.”
Later in the segment, Wilmore does an interview with an actor playing Oakland’s fake new police chief, Ofc. Bob Miller.
“What exactly are you doing to root out this culture of abuse?” Wilmore asks the actor.
“That’s a good question, Larry,” the actor responds. “That’s why I got all my officers just watching porn all day. That’s what they do.”
Later in the mock interview, after a close-up shot of Wilmore asking a follow-up question, an actress is seen replacing the first actor.
“Wait a second. Who are you?” Wilmore asks.
“I’m the new, new police chief, Ofc. Johnson,” the actress said. “That’s right. Ofc. Miller was just caught with a group of teenage prostitutes, so he had to go.”
After Wilmore asks, “OK, so now you’re the new, new police chief, I guess. Ofc. Johnson. Is that right?” yet another actor is seen at the mock police chief’s desk, Ofc. Frank Wilson.
“I’m Ofc. Wilson,” the actor said. “The new, new, new police chief, and I am here to stay.
After Ofc. Wilson “resigns,” the first actor — Ofc. Miller — comes back saying he returned as police chief and “got off on a technicality.”
