The impact of the shutdown goes beyond furloughed government workers.
Some small businesses around the Bay Area have noticed a dramatic decline in customers.
Sam Samhouri, the owner of City Cup Cafe in Oakland said the government shutdown is causing him to lose about 60 percent of his business.
The coffee shop sits across the street from a federal building, which is normally busy.
Sam Samhouri said people coming in and out of the building would usually stop by his cafe, but now its empty.
His only customers are the construction workers who are working on a new building down the block.
“Without them, I’d be closed,” he said.
A nearby pizza shop has also noticed a steep drop in business during the day when government employees would usually be at work.
Talal Layan, the co-owner of Mun-Cheez said,” Everyday we’re losing a lot of money. We’re losing customers as well.”
Samhouri says the shutdown is having a ripple effect that goes beyond restaurant owners.
“I’m not the only person to get hurt. The produce market got hurt, the pastry company got hurt,” he said. “It’s just like a little disease. It starts in one area and it spreads around.”
