LOS ANGELES (KRON) — A plane carrying 300 people made an emergency landing at LAX on Monday after an indicator light went on in the cockpit.

The flight was initially delayed due to a fuel spill at the gate that did not appear to be a mechanical issue, according to a statement from Hawaiian Airlines.

Hawaiian Airlines Flight 3 returned to to Los Angeles International Airport at 12:48 p.m. not long after taking off for Hawaii, LAX spokeswoman Nancy Castles told Los Angeles news station KTLA.

The Airbus A330 turned back midflight due a mechanical issues, Castles said. No further details about the problem were released.

According to Hawaiian Airlines flight-tracking page, the status of the flight indicated only that it had been diverted.

The plane appeared to land safely about 2:18 p.m. and taxied on the runway toward a gate, KTLA reported.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott said on Twitter that the plane had landed safely and firefighters were on scene.

During the flight, crew members told passengers they believed there was enough fuel to get to Honolulu, passenger Jessica Ariola told KTLA.

“We took off and got about an hour and then they turned us back around. They said they were still leaking fuel,” Ariola said.
