SAN JOSE (KRON) — One and a half million Californians are expected to fly somewhere over the holidays.
That’s up more than 5 percent, driven in part by a strong local economy and more flights to more places.
The numbers are even higher at Mineta San Jose International Airport, spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said.
“During that 18 day span, we will see some 800,000 arriving and departing passengers which is 9 percent higher than last year,” said Barnes.
That means roughly 70,000 more passengers than last year.
What’s more, the airport is reporting that overall traffic is up 16 percent for the year with a projected 14.3 million passengers, a new record.
A big chunk of that is business travel but this time of year it’s more likely because of families traveling.
“Business travel is usually a solo trip but this time of year we are looking at large groups of people, families traveling together for long-awaited holiday get togethers,” said Barnes.
A few flights were delayed by fog this morning, a rare event in San Jose.
It’s a reminder that bad weather someplace else can impact flights in and out of the Bay Area.
