SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory on Thursday due to some hazardous condition along the Bay Area’s coast.
The advisory will go into effect at 6 a.m. on Thursday and will last through Friday.
Beachgoers are urged to be cautious of large breaking waves along the coast that will be capable of sweeping people into the ocean.
The advisory covers the coastal parts of the North Bay including Point Reyes National Seashore, San Francisco Peninsula Coast, Northern Monterey Bay, Southern Monterey Bay and Big Sur Coast.
NWS officials say to be cautious of the following:Sneaker Waves
- Large wave sets possible after long periods of small waves
- Large waves may catch people unaware and pull them into the cold, turbulent ocean
- Lulls in large wave activity may last up to 30 minutes
- Remain farther back from the water’s edge and off of rocks and jetties
Rip Currents
- Long period energetic swell will bring enhanced rip current activity to coastal waters
- Beach visitors are encouraged to remain away from and out of the water during this swell event
Coastal Erosion
- Long period energetic swell is expected to impact coastal bluffs and dunes
- Continued sediment transport is likely
- People or organizations with coastal concerns are encouraged to prepare for this swell event ahead of time
Large Surf
- Surf heights of 22 to 27 feet with larger sets possible
- Beach visitors are encouraged to remain away from and out of the water during this swell event
