HALF MOON BAY (KRON)—With the high surf hitting northern California beaches, the Mavericks surfing competition’s window for the contest is now open.
As in year’s past, the competition committee is closing monitoring conditions which will bring surfing’s elite to Half Moon Bay on 24 hours notice.
However, this year there will be a one hour contest of female surfers also vying for honors.
Surfers we talked to seemed to be just fine with the addition.
“I think it’s great I know some chicks that charge pretty hard and good for them they should get out there,” one surfer said.
“The more the merrier,” one male surfer said.
“It’s just awesome seeing them charging out there,” another surfer said. “There’s a lot of great women out there surfing right now. It’s fun to see them out there being competitive.
“In Hawaii, you see it all over they’re beautiful,” one male surfer said.
While Maverick’s organizers say it is an evolution of the contest their permit from the California Coastal Commission was contingent on adding a women’s competition.
We can expect to see six women surfers hitting the waves as part of the competition.
