High-Speed Chase Through Four Counties Ends In Crash, Man Arrested

(KRON) — A man was arrested after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase through several Bay Area counties.

The pursuit started on I-80 near Vacaville at around 2 p.m. when a CHP officer attempted to stop a gold Nissan Pathfinder for speeding. The officer ran plates on the SUV but the plates came back clean. The driver, unaware that officers had run a check on the vehicle, sped away.SLIDE SHOW: View photos of the chase

The unidentified motorist then led officers on a high-speed chase from Solano County through Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara counties. The driver turned north onto Interstate 280 after reaching San Jose towards San Mateo County.

Images from the pursuit show that at least two tires on the SUV had disintegrated but the driver continued maneuvering through traffic at high speeds of up to 90 mph.

The chase ended on northbound I-280 near the Magdalena Avenue exit when the driver lost control of the SUV and crashed. The vehicle slammed into a concrete median barrier, careened back into I-280 lanes before rolling over onto its side.

The driver was able to get out of the SUV and walk away from the wreck. He was taken into custody without further incident and was later transported to a hospital for observation.

The man was the only person in the vehicle.

The driver, Ramon Bernal, 24, of Davis, was transported to Stanford Medical Center for evaluation and medical clearance, after which point he will be booked into Santa Clara County Jail on charges felony evasion of peace officer and driving under the influence of drugs.
