FAIRFIELD (KRON) — A Fairfield high school student has been arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to school, according to police.

Police said staff at Vanden High School found that a student had a gun at the school on Wednesday morning. The assistant principal and a school resource officer detained the 14-year-old Fairfield resident, according to police.

The student did not have the gun, but did have a live .380 caliber bullet, police said. Officers found the student hid the gun under a trash bin in a restroom at the school.

The gun was recovered unloaded, police said.

“The 14-year-old had also hidden the gun magazine, with two bullets, in another student’s bag unbeknownst to the other student. The magazine and ammo were also recovered,” police said in a press release.

The student was arrested for being in possession of a gun on school grounds, being a minor in possession of  ammo, and destroying/concealing evidence.

Police also found a .380 caliber bullet casing in the teen’s bedroom.

He was booked into the Solano Juvenile Detention Center.

Police found the gun owner is an adult relative of the student, and the gun has been taken without permission. Police are investigating if the gun was legally stored.

“The Fairfield Police Department would like to remind all gun owners to be responsible and secure firearms in a manner that juveniles cannot gain access to them. Teens that are infatuated with weapons frequently take them from their own home, and are at risk of harming themselves and others with them. Police said anyone who reports illegal guns on school grounds may be eligible for a $200 reward.
