Yikes!
Health officials are warning of a rise in super gonorrhea cases in Britain.
Super gonorrhea is actually several strains of the STI that are difficult to treat with conventional antibiotics.
According to a report by Public Health England, a resistance to three of the key drugs used to treat the infection — ciprofloxacin, cefixime and azithromycin — is growing.
This comes after officials warned a British man had contracted the “world’s worst ever” case of super-gonorrhea after having “sexual contact” with a woman in southeast Asia. Officials say that man was cured after three days of antibiotics.
About 78 million people are infected with gonorrhea each year, according to the World Health Organization. It is the second most common form of STI in England.
It affects the genitals, rectum and throat, producing a thick green or yellow discharge from the vagina or penis.
Last month, it was revealed rates of sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis, chlamydia and super gonorrhea are reaching record highs.
Millions of new infections have been recorded over the last four years alone in the US, health officials have said.
It comes after it emerged cases of syphilis reported in England have reached the highest level since 1949 — up almost 150 percent in 10 years.
Any person who is sexually active can contract super gonorrhea, but those who have multiple partners frequently or do not take appropriate precautions are more susceptible to the STI.
Health officials are reminding those who are sexually active to use condoms every time during sex and to refrain from sharing toys.
