HALF MOON BAY (KRON) — Residents in Half Moon Bay gathered for an annual Halloween festival that includes seeing who grew the biggest pumpkin around town, Monday morning.
According to Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival twitter account, the largest pumpkin in the state of California weighs at 1,723 pounds and was grown by Russ Pingrey. The overall winning pumpkin weighed at 1,910 pounds, and that was grown from Littlerock, Wash. resident Cindy Tobek.
Tobeck’s winning pumpkin weighed 200 pounds more than Pingrey’s. She will earned a $1,460 cash prize and has a special place in the Pumpkin festival parade.
“I really knocked it out of the park today,” a somewhat breathless Tobeck said after the weigh-in. “What I’m most excited about is being in the parade.”
The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off winner is a school teacher, when she is not busy growing the largest pumpkin in the nation.
Tobeck was seen with a big smile on her face standing on top of her pumpkin when she was announced to be the winner.
She said she hasn’t given much thought to what she will do with her cash prize, but she knows what she is wearing to the parade.
“It’s a pumpkin crown and a pumpkin scepter and an orange cape,” Tobeck said.
This isn’t Tobeck’s first prize in a pumpkin-related competition.
She also won the first prize in her home state of Washington after growing squash that weighed more than 1,500 pounds.
Tobeck not only grows pumpkins in her spare time, but she also enjoys competing in horse shows.
She won a competition with her Arabian gelding team recently.
“I’m having the best month ever,” Tobeck said.
Congrats to our 2016 Grand Champion Cindy Tobeck, a sweet and spunky elementary school teacher from Littlerock WA… https://t.co/0r5pC8UfA4
