Hail reported in the Bay Area, more could be coming

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA (KRON) — Hail was reported for a short time in Fremont Thursday morning, and officials with the National Weather Service say that more could be coming.

The Alameda County town was pounded with pea-sized hail for about a minute around 8 a.m.

National Weather Service forecaster Steve Anderson said that he doesn’t think any of Thursday’s hail will cause any property damage. Anderson said there is zero chance of any hail on Friday.

A low-pressure system in the upper level of the atmosphere over California combined with unstable air in the atmosphere caused the hail, Anderson said.

He said droplets of water rise up into a cloud where the droplet freezes. The ice particle drops in the cloud and air currents bring it back up until the air currents can no longer hold the particle and it falls to the

ground as hail, Anderson said.
