NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (KRON) – A guilty conscience led someone who stole a large metal sign in Florida to return it – 30 years later.
The New Smyrna Beach Police Department received a “strange” package in the mail containing the large metal sign along with a note and a $50 money order.
The sign says: New Smyrna Beach Says No to Drugs. A picture of the sign was posted Wednesday on the police department’s Facebook page.
The stolen sign came with an anonymous note asking officials for forgiveness and to use the money to reinstall the sign.
“Fathers of NSB, Please accept this sign and funds to reinstall it, as well as my apologies. Sometime in the late 80’s, I stole this sign in a fit of youthful exuberance. Forgive Me!”
On Facebook, department officials said that the “act of contrition” gives hope that people can do the right thing, even if it takes 30 years. The Associated Press contributed to this story
