SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Hurricane Guillermo continues to race west-northwest but remains far away from Hawaii deep in the Pacific.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Guillermo is about 1,145 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. The Category 2 hurricane had maximum sustained winds near 105 mph.
The center says Guillermo hasn’t strengthened over several hours but some strengthening is possible before the storm is expected to begin weakening on Sunday.
It is moving west-northwest at 12 knots (about 14 mph) with a decrease in forward speed expected Saturday afternoon.
Current forecast models show Guillermo will move near the Hawaiian islands sometime next week, though it is expected to weaken to a tropical storm by then.
