Group of Lafayette renters asking for rent control

LAFAYETTE (KRON) — Renters living at 1038 on Second Street in Lafayette are living on edge, said one resident.

Since new property owners took over the complex in February, residents say they are being priced out of their apartments.

They estimate that since February, about 20 families have moved out because they can’t afford the new, higher rent.

There is no rent control law in Lafayette, so rents can go up as much as an owner wants.

Resident Omar Urbina says that people are living in fear that they will either get an eviction notice, or a rent hike that they can’t afford.

“We would like the rent to stay the same. If there is an increase, then cost of living increase, something reasonable, 3 percent. But 60 percent, 80 percent, how we going to do that?”

The management company did not return a request for comment.
