Governor Gavin Newsom made a stop in Magalia on Thursday to meet with Camp Fire victims and Butte County leaders.
Newsom sat down with students at Pine Ridge School and listened to their concerns about life after the devastating wildfire.
Aliea Wringel is a seventh-grader at the school and says she lost several pets and her home in the blaze.
“Just being around the house is sad because you remember ‘Oh I forgot that!’,” she said. “It disappoints you, it makes you really upset.”
The governor’s visit comes after he signed emergency legislation to backfill all property tax losses for the area for the next three years.
Newsom said, “That’s not something to applaud, that’s something you should expect.”
While the emergency funds passed, the governor has said funding for disaster relief efforts could be at risk if President Trump declares an emergency at the border.
Despite that, the residents in Butte County are staying hopeful.
Paradise City Councilman Steve Crowder said, “I know with the help we’ve got out there, we’re coming back, and we’re coming back stronger than we’ve ever been.”
