SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The Bay Area is celebrating a very special anniversary on Friday night–the Golden Gate Bridge is turning 79 years old.

The iconic bridge opened on May 27 to the public in 1937.

When the bridge first opened, only foot traffic was allowed. People were able to commute between San Francisco and Marin County in their cars the very next day.

When the bridge was built, the bridge cost the city $35 million.

If the bridge was built in 2016, the cost to make it would be more than $1 billion.
