WALNUT CREEK (KRON) — A giant tree fell onto a house in Walnut Creek early Friday morning.
Police responded around 1:15 a.m. to the house located at the 1500 block Westwood Court, police said.
The large old heritage oak tree fell from the Lancaster Park just off of Lancaster Road.
Residents in the home said they thought it was an earthquake.
No injuries have been reported, but the tree caused extensive damage to the home and a fence.
The tree was planted on city property.
City officials believe that the tree could have fallen because of a soil failure.
Within the last few days, the homeowner had contacted the city about that same tree because he had noticed it was leaning more than usual.
The city was scheduled to inspect the tree on Friday.
City officials say it will take several hours to remove the tree.
