GROVETOWN, Ga. (WIAT)  — One Georgia mayor has a plan he says will ensure children’s safety this Halloween.

Mayor Gary Jones announced on Facebook that he will gather all registered sex offenders on probation and confine them to the city council chambers for 3 hours Halloween night. Initially, Jones said the city would be rounding up all registered sex offenders – a move that could be considered unlawful detention and grounds for a lawsuit  – but later clarified he was referring only to those on probation, about 25 to 30 people.

In response to some community pushback, mainly in the form of Facebook comments, Jones made another post in defense of his plan.

“Friends I am not personally going to pick up, round up, call or going to any sex offender’s home,” Jones said in the post. “This is a joint effort with GA Community Probation Services. They are the one’s with the authority under Special Conditions to require that offenders report. The reporting location is Grovetown City Hall. This is legal….. good grief!”

Jones said the move is purely precautionary and there have been no previous incidents of sex offenders targeting children on Halloween.
