Gateway Apartments management is not letting certain tenants return to their apartments in case asbestos was exposed after the fire that broke out on Monday evening.

The Tenants Association says it is dangerous to breathe in particles and even a little time spent in the affected apartments could cause long-term damage.

The apartment building has had a restoration company working since early Tuesday morning.

The complex hopes to have all tenants on the 17th floor and higher available by the end of the day on Tuesday.

Tenants on the 3rd through 8th floors have returned to their apartments, including many on the 9th through 11th floors.

However, apartment numbers one and two on floors eight through 16 remain inaccessible due to fire damage, water damage, or asbestos.

Management continues to look for hotel rooms for those without a home for the night.

In addition, they are looking for permanent housing for some in the future.

Gateway management would like tenants to know that even if housing accommodations have been found for the next few nights, contacting the Red Cross at (415) 427-8010 is still an option.
