SANTA ROSA (BCN) — A road crew working on a pavement project in Santa Rosa ruptured a gas line, forcing the closure of an elementary school this morning, authorities said.

The third-party work crew struck a 2-inch plastic line with a backhoe at Stony Point Road and Campbell Drive at 11:26 a.m., PG&E spokesman Nick Smith said.

PG&E crews isolated a gas main on the west side of Stony Point Road and were working to isolate a main on the east side of the road. Crews were still trying to stop the gas leak as of 1:45 p.m., Smith said.

Robert L. Stevens Elementary School at 2345 Giffen Ave. was evacuated, Santa Rosa Fire Battalion Chief Ken Sebastiani said.

Stony Point Road was closed between Giffen and Lazzini avenues, Sebastiani said.
