FRESNO, California (KSEE) — Fresno police announced a large crackdown on the Fresneck gang.
Chief Jerry Dyer says there is a grand jury indictment on nine of the members. He says they committed crimes like rape, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and much more.
Chief Dyer says this is the first time of this kind of a crackdown on the Fresneck gang. They say what makes this a big deal is the arrest of ring leader Joey Carroll, who they say was instrumental in these crimes.
Police say the nine gang members indicted lead them to 30 other Fresnecks who have also been arrested.
Police say the crimes started on January 10th with a carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon; then days later the same victim was robbed at knife point.
Fresno police say if the victim did not come forward they may not have learned about several other crimes committed in the month of January- including gang rape, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon.
“We took out much of the leadership in the Fresneck gang. These individuals are going to prison for perhaps the rest of their life and when you remove this element it has the ability to significantly impact their future,” stated Chief Dyer.
Police say a grand jury process was initiated when they learned about the crimes. They used this avenue because they say the Fresnecks were intimidating the witnesses and threatening to kill them.
The trial begins July 2nd and the assistant DA says some of these gang members could face multiple life sentences.
