LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) – Former Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1999 killings of two brothers and the 2001 slaying of another man.

City News Service reports Smith, 48, was sentenced Friday.

A jury convicted him last November of shooting brothers Kevin and Ricky Nettles in 1999 and stabbing Dennis Henderson in 2001. Evidence showed all three were also tortured.

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on a fourth murder charge, involving the 2008 death of Smith’s friend Maurilio Ponce.

Prosecutors said Ponce was lured to an Antelope Valley desert highway where he was beaten and shot after a business deal went bad.

No motive was given for the other killings.

Smith, who retired in 1998, played seven seasons for the Raiders.
