Former NBA player Chris Herren coming to Bay Area to discuss opioid addictions

WALNUT CREEK (KRON) — Opioid drug abuse is a growing problem, and it affects almost every community and family in some way.

Shocking as it is, heroin almost took the life of former NBA basketball player Chris Herren.

Now, he wants to do something about it.

As a teen, Herren dreamed of one day playing for his hometown team, the Boston Celtics. And in 1999, that dream became a reality.

But he soon lost it all due to drug addiction. If it wasn’t for the help of Warriors legend Chris Mullin, Herren wouldn’t be here.

Now, alcohol and drug-free since 2008, Herren is sharing his story in hopes of saving others, especially teens.

On Wednesday, Herren will be in the Bay Area.

He’ll be at the Lesher Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. in Walnut Creek.
