SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KRON) — A Sunnyvale police officer gave CPR to a man who was unconscious and not breathing on Thursday.
The 72-year-old man did not survive.
It was later learned that the man had recently been on a cruise with two passengers who were suspected of having COVID-19.
“While obtaining the patient’s medical history, a family member advised us that the patient had recently been on a cruise where two other passengers were suspected of having COVID-19,” Police Chief Phan Ngo said.
Ngo said the responding officers performed CPR but did not use mouth-to-mouth.
“At this time we don’t yet know if the patient had COVID-19,” he said.
As many as seven Sunnyvale officers were possibly exposed, but that has not been confirmed. The officers are self-isolating at home.
Once they were off of the call, they were under quarantine at a city facility for several hours before being sent home.
The officers have been directed not to return to work and to self isolate until further notice.
Police say they have been in contact with the CDC and are following protocol.
“We’re doing everything that we can to keep the community safe and we will continue to work with partner agencies to keep our community informed,” Ngo said.
The chief wouldn’t elaborate on which cruise ship the man may have been on. He said as of now, there are no plans to test the officers unless they show symptoms.
The officers will not return to work unless they are cleared by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.
