CONCORD (KRON) — Hundreds of students at Clayton Valley Charter High School in Concord are staying home from school due to an outbreak of the flu, according to school officials.

200 to 250 students stayed home sick on Wednesday, school spokesman Mike MeCey said. 2,200 students attend the school.

The typical number of kids out sick from the school at this time of year is about 100 or 150, MeCey said.

The school sent home a notice to parents about the outbreak, with flu-prevention tips and information on the sanitation efforts taking place at the school, including sanitizing keyboards, doorknobs and bathroom fixtures, MeCey said.

“It’s always serious when it comes to a health issue,” MeCey said.

However, MeCey says he believe the media reports about the outbreak have been overblown and that the media attention is “borderline ridiculous.”
