SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Firefighters were battling a two-alarm fire at a three-story Victorian home in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood on Friday morning.
The San Francisco Fire Department responded to a call at 8:37 a.m. reporting a fire at the home located at 157 Prospect Avenue.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and began battling heavy flames in the upper stories, said spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter.
Eight people live in the building, no residents were injured.
The home’s eight residents, including children, were displaced as a result of the fire. None of the residents were injured, Baxter said.
Two homes were impacted, both belong to families with young children who are now displaced.
Firefighters, however, were able to save the some of the family’s belongings. When the family expressed concern about irreplaceable photos that were stuck inside the home, a fire crew went inside and was able to locate and retrieve the photos and photo albums belonging to the family, according to Baxter.
One firefighter was injured battling the fire and was taken to the trauma center suffering from moderate injuries.
The injured firefighter was wearing safety gear when part of the building fell on him. He was taken to a San Francisco general hospital for treatment and is expected to be released later Friday, according to Baxter.
As of around 2:30 p.m., the firefighter is doing well and will be discharged from the hospital Friday afternoon.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire by about 11:30 a.m., Baxter said.
Fire crews had initially shut down Prospect Avenue from the 100 block to the 300 block, asking residents to avoid the area. Prospect Avenue is expected to reopen by about 1:30 p.m., according to Baxter.
Fire officials recovered priceless family photos and returned them to the owner.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
