FAIRFIELD (KRON) — Firefighters are battling a three-alarm fire burning in an auto junkyard in Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon.
The fire at the Fairvac Auto and Truck Wrecking Junkyard at 5016 Peabody Road started around 2 p.m., according to a woman who answered the phone at the junkyard.
She said she did not know how many cars were burning.
Dana Bates, the owner of the junkyard, said the fire appears to have started in a compost pile at the Sun-Ray Landscaping Company at 5044 Peabody Road near her salvage yard.
The owner of the yard said more than 100 cars were burned.
Bates said she has been running the salvage yard for 20 to 30 years.
“The compost is a like a manure fire. There’s gas in them and the sun starts a fire,” Bates said.
No structures on the auto salvage yard burned, Bates said.
“I have insurance but they (the landscaping company) will have to cover this,” Bates said.
A Fairfield Police Department dispatcher said police were informed of the fire at 2:04 p.m.
