ANTIOCH (BCN) — A train struck and killed a 50-year-old father who did not hear it approaching last week in Antioch, according to a police report.
The man, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as Antioch resident Santos Cervantes, was walking on tracks as a freight train approached a trestle near A Street at 8:34 p.m. on July 11, according to police.
Police said Cervantes did not hear the BNSF Railway train, which was traveling at about 45 mph. Witnesses said the man may not have been paying attention.
He was struck by the train and launched 150 feet into a nearby body of water, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cervantes had seven children and three grandchildren, according to a page created on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe by the man’s family to help pay for funeral expenses. The page, which had raised $1,825 as of Monday afternoon.
