MILL VALLEY (BCN) — Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Marin County.
The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of the highway near Seminary Drive in Mill Valley, according to the CHP.
Estrada, a San Francisco resident, was driving a 2014 Subaru WRX STI south on the highway just south of the Seminary Drive off-ramp near Mill Valley around 4 a.m. Saturday, California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay said.
The Subaru caught fire after it traveled down an embankment off the right side of the highway and struck a tree, Barclay said.
Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene, and a passenger, Cornell Ubungen, 29, of San Francisco, managed to escape the burning vehicle, according to the CHP.
Ubungen suffered a broken arm and lacerations and bruises on his head and was taken to Marin General Hospital, CHP Officer Patrick Roth said.
An employee of the Acqua Hotel at 555 Redwood Highway in Mill Valley witnessed the crash, Roth said.
Ubungen said he and Estrada were at the Graton Resort & Casino near Rohnert Park before the crash, Roth said.
Barclay said open containers were found in the Subaru and the CHP is investigating alcohol as a possible cause of the collision.
