A 93-year-old grandmother is recovering from a broken hip after she was violently robbed and attacked, and the alleged attacker is behind bars.

On Thursday night, we’re learning that suspect is also wanted for robbery in at least one other city.

That attack happened at a Bank of America in Concord, while the grandmother was with her 64-year-old caretaker. KRON4 broke the news about the arrest Wednesday night.

Now, the victim’s family is speaking out.

The last couple of days have been intense for the Pedersen family.

Right now, they’re breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that the suspect is behind bars.

“Hopefully, this person is no longer going to be able to do these crimes to anyone,” Greg Pedersen said.

The assault and robbery in Concord last Friday has affected 93-year-old grandma Ann Marie Pedersen both physically and mentally.

“The violence that she endured has been very taxing on her as she’s been having flashbacks of what happened to her on Friday night,” Pedersen said.

Otto Halafihi was arrested and taken into custody Wednesday night in the City of Patterson in Stanislaus County. Once his photos started circulating for robbing the senior citizen and her caretaker, tips from the community led Concord police to the suspect, who turned himself in at a police substation.

“Justice is served when we come together as a community,” Pedersen said.

In addition to elder abuse and robbery, the 29-year-old has been arrested for robbing a Lowe’s Home Improvement in Fremont back on May 9.

In that robbery, police say the 6-foot-3-inch, 300-pound man went up to a register and lifted the front of his shirt, took out a semi-automatic handgun, and threatened to shoot employees if they didn’t back away from the register.

He left the store with the two items he had in his hands and took off in a white vehicle similar to the one he was seen driving in Friday’s robbery, according to authorities.

“I do believe that God will take care of people who steal,” the 93-year-old Pedersen said.

Halafihi was returned to the Bay Area where he remains in jail.

His 93-year-old victim is looking at months of physical therapy to recover from this injury.
